So Apple's "Surprise and Shine" event is officially set for tomorrow, September 9, at 10am Pacific, streamed live from Apple Park. Keeping its familiar exterior design but enhanced with a more powerful new processor.

What can you expect with the new processor?

The new chip brings better speed and battery life, and it's set to support a much more advanced Siri AI along with deeper Apple Intelligence features. Both the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Ultra 4 are expected to run on the new T8320 processor (part of what's being called the "Watch8" chip family) — a genuinely new architecture after Series 9, 10, and 11 all quietly shared the same "Watch7" silicon for three generations straight. It's basically the first proper chip upgrade the Watch has seen since 2023, and with Siri getting a full AI rebuild in watchOS 27, the extra horsepower is arriving right on time.

There's also new features for both health and software this year. Heart rate sensors are expected to collect information continuously throughout the day rather than just in bursts, and Apple is reportedly reworking the Health and Fitness app to surface wellness metrics in a way that feels a lot closer to what Whoop or Oura already offer. That said, don't get your hopes up for anything like blood glucose monitoring just yet — that kind of advanced sensor tech is still said to be years away from making it onto your wrist.

 

What are the expected price ranges in South Africa?

Since the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Ultra 4 haven't officially released yet, the pricing below is only an estimate based on current models and exchange rates, not confirmed Apple pricing. The Apple Watch Series 12, going off the previous Series 11 which launched around R9,399, will likely debut in a similar ballpark — though the final number could shift a bit depending on where the Rand sits against the Dollar closer to launch. The Apple Watch Ultra 4 is a similar story: the outgoing Ultra 3 retailed around R18,700, so expect the new model to land somewhere close to that, possibly a touch higher if the exchange rate isn't in our favour. We'll get the real numbers once Apple actually takes the stage tomorrow.
